The Indian Ridge Jazz Band is a small group of musicians that study jazz styles, scales, chords and history. Students will learn to improvise and compose melodies within the scale being studied. Jazz students will study jazz history and artists and learn how to write/perform jazz scales, modes, and chords on their individual instrument and on a keyboard.
The practice routine for this course is difficult since most of the material is advanced and requires serious study. Field trips to concerts are part of the course. It is essential that jazz saxophonists use heavier reeds (e.g. 4). Several theory and method books are used in this course. Students also participate in jazz festival, and perform regularly throughout the community. The band has performed at Walt Disney World, City Hall, the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Tennessee, and for the Florida Marlins and the Miami Heat.
